In 2022–23, the region's prominence was further amplified when the Port of New York and New Jersey saw tremendous influxes of cargo flowing into its terminals. Last year, it moved close to 9.5 million TEUs, the largest amount of cargo annually in port history. From August to November 2022, it was the busiest container port in the country, surpassing the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, which long held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the nation, respectively. That dominance continued into early 2023 when the port moved the most cargo in February — normally a slow period logistically.
