That's $36 or 2.3 percent below the week before, but $783 or about double the spot rate for the same week last year. This index was $283 or 22.1 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base rate of $1,279 per TEU. Comprehensive SCFI* Spot flat: The May 16, 2014, comprehensive SCFI reading was 1,161.39 points, slipping 1.67 points or 0.1 percent below the week before. This index was 170.61 points or 17.2 percent above a year ago and 1 61.39 points or 16.1 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base index of 1,000 points. To U.S. WEST COAST base ports* Spot spikes: The May 16 U.S. West Coast base port average spot rate was $1,987 per FEU, $80 or 4.2 percent above the week before, but $25 or 1.2 percent below a year ago. This index was $556 or 38.9 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base rate of $1,431 per FEU. To U.S. EAST COAST base ports* Spot spikes: The May 16 U.S. East Coast base port average spot rate was $3,424 per FEU, spiking $108 or 3.3 percent above the week before. This index was $255 or 8 percent above a year ago and $985 or 40.4 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base rate of $2,439 per FEU. To NORTH EUROPE base ports* Spot tumbles: The May 16, 2014, North Europe base port average spot rate was $1,287 per TEU, $114 or 8.1 percent below the week before. This index was $619 or 92.7 percent above a year ago and $55 or 4.5 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base rate of $1,232 per TEU. n Shanghai export average spot rates for the following four trade lanes are among the 15 component trade lanes in the weekly SCFI — Shanghai Containerized Freight Index produced by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange and weigh 57.5 percent of the SCFI comprehensive reading.
