GLOBAL LOGISTICS PROFILE The Port of Houston Delivers Capital Improvements As one of the largest ports in the world, handling 229 million tons of cargo a year, the Port of Houston is a 25-mile-long complex of public and private terminals located along the 52-mile-long Houston Ship Channel, situated eight miles from downtown Houston, Texas. The port is the main driver of global trade and commerce along the U.S. Gulf Coast. A vast network of interstate highways and three Class I railways connect Houston with an inland market of approximately 100 million customers within 1,000 miles of the port. More than 25 million square feet of distribution centers are located near the port, and other centers are growing around the Houston metropolitan area. More than 8,000 vessel calls and 200,000 barge transfers are made at the port each year. All major tradelanes are served, linking Houston with the world. The Port of Houston Authority has never been more committed to ensuring customers are well served today and in the years to come. To meet your growing cargo needs, we are investing more than $1 billion in the next five years in expansion and improvement projects at our facilities. Specifically, the following are priorities: — 45-foot-deep-draft channels to accommodate larger ships. — Super-post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes to handle larger ships and increase productivity. — Additional space, expanded gates and technology systems to increase efficiency. — Open and fluid access to road, highway and rail networks. — Equipment balance and empty container availability through increased import volumes. — Adequate federal staffing and resources at our facilities to support growth. — Intermodal rail options to access markets, lower cost, reduce emissions and open up truck capacity. — Options to expand truck capacity (exploring adjustment of gate hours and heavy weight corridors.) Maintaining and improving efficiency at the public terminals through more modern facilities and equipment is essential to meeting one of our key mandates – to promote and facilitate commerce to benefit not only our local partners, but also Texas and the nation.
