Eyeing much the same opportunity, United Arab Shipping Co., an emerging global player based in Dubai, last year purchased 2,000 reefer containers and recently launched services from Europe and Asia to the east coast of South Amer- ica in partnership with Hamburg Sud. The technology innovations found on the newest reefer containers add impressive capabilities to cold chain man- agement, too. "What we have done over the past fi ve to six years is develop new technology for our reefer containers so that they have become much more energy effi cient," Maersk's Petersen said. "There are certain technologies — primarily com- puter software — that allow us to run the refrigeration on our containers much less than we did in the past. In addition to the technical advances, the boxes themselves have become bet ter i nsu lated, w ith accompanying improvements to how the containers open and close, and this is allowing us to reduce our energy costs at the same time that we're expanding the business." Drewry predicts the investments by containerized carriers will cut further into the market share of specialized reefer carriers. But the niche carriers aren't relinquishing their share of the ma rket ea sily. Seatrade, the world's largest specialized reefer carrier, also is making sizable investments to retain and grow its business, for example. In January, Seatrade will take delivery of two 2,200-TEU high-specifi cation reefer container vessels.
