SURFACE & DOMESTIC TRANSPORTATION THE JOURNAL OF COMMERCE 45 Appalachian port will have a strong auto and carpet manufactur- ing base to rely on in northwest Georgia. While the port will help maintain the region's designation as the "Carpet Capital of the World," Lynch said, the new port in Chatsworth also is geared to serve Tennessee Valley shippers moving a variety of cargo destined for Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and farther west. The port authority has said the inland port will have initial annual capacity of 50,000 container lifts. Capacity will double under a 10-year development plan. It's also been estimated the new inland port will offset more than 350 truck miles per container, or close to 18 million miles every year, reducing Atlanta truck traffi c by 40,000 moves annually by providing a new intermodal option to and from the Port of Savannah. While Cordele's business in agricultural exports and auto part imports is growing, the Appalachian operation hopes to tap into the next phase of inland ports as intermediate distribution centers for metropolitan areas. That's where the industrial real estate growth is, according to commercial real estate brokerage group CBRE. The next phase of Network Georgia is about maintaining and expanding Atlanta's reputation as the main distribution center for the Southeast, Lynch said. "Network Georgia really starts with one of the fi rst major inland ports: Atlanta," he said. "At the GPA, we call it Port Atlanta, because that's what it is. I think Cordele fi ts into that too. Network Georgia is all about that." JOC Contact Reynolds Hutchins at and follow him on Twitter: @Hutchins_JOC.
